Is there a shortage of midwives in Germany - what do the statistics say?

According to a study from 2023, there is still a shortage of midwives, not only globally, but also in Germany. "Unlike in many other fields, however, this shortage is currently not due to a lack of young talent. According to Ulrike Geppert-Orthofer, the general conditions are increasingly forcing even the most committed idealists to give up - many of them only work for a few years, part-time or even as mini-jobbers in their dream job. [...]" It is not uncommon for 24-hour on-call duty, constant overwork and permanent disregard to lead to burnout.

SAMPLE:
In collaboration with the market research institute appinio, 570 mothers from all over Germany were surveyed about their search for a midwife and their experiences with postnatal care. The last birth could not have been more than three years ago.
