Midwives in crisis - what is behind the criticism?

Midwives in crisis - what is behind the criticism?

Maybe even a little bit of society's own inferiority feelings?

Midwives accompany us in one of the most formative moments of life and then suddenly they are gone again. For many families, there is only a short period in which the work of midwives is present. After that, this important profession often fades into the background.

But midwives are something that affects us all. They stand by mothers, children and families, bear immense responsibility and do work that is priceless. But that is precisely where the problem lies: the remuneration does not reflect this responsibility. Many midwives have to give up their profession, not because they do not love it, but because the conditions are simply unbearable.

Maybe this will trigger some people because it raises questions: Why is such an important profession so poorly paid? Why is midwifery often so undervalued in society? And why do we only feel affected when we ourselves are dependent on this help?

Midwives are more than just companions in special moments in life. They are systemically relevant. For every family, for our society. Perhaps we should remind ourselves of this more often.
