Midwifery, both freelance and employed, is often associated with a constant "survival mode" - constant work, working hours that are not family-friendly, and the constant pressure of difficult financial conditions to somehow make the whole thing "still worthwhile". Yes, you could call it a midwife hustle!

In our survival mode, there is no fixed schedule. Births always happen when it is least convenient - in the middle of the night, on weekends or on holidays. Our sleep rhythm? None... Especially with our own children.

We are midwives, pastors, billing professionals, telephone jokers and victims of bureaucracy. A home visit, a few phone calls, a follow-up examination - and then a quick invoice. There is never a moment when we are really "finished".

We fight for the lives of mothers and babies, but for many we are simply always there, always available, always ready. Society expects us to work around the clock, but there is no real recognition, neither financially nor in the form of broad political support.
